GO FROM GREEN TO SPARKLING CLEAN

During the colder months, the combination of sun and rain dilutes pool chemicals, especially chlorine and salt. This often turns pool water green while providing ideal growing conditions for algae to bloom. 

Despite being microscopic in size, algae can quickly multiply when chemicals are unbalanced, turning water varying shades of green and creating patches of yellow, pink or black throughout your pool.

The four main types of algae we see in our swimming pool include: 

• Green is the most common that creates cloudy water and is often associated with poor filtration and/or sanitisation
• Black is the hardest type of algae to get rid of, forming dark, unsightly spots on pool surfaces
• Yellow is mostly found clinging to pool walls in shady spots and can form sheets across the surface of the water in particularly bad cases
• Pink algae is technically a bacterium that appears as spots or streaks in cracks, crevices and corners

Algae not only makes the water uninviting but can also damage pool equipment and create unhygienic swimming conditions. If your pool is looking a little murky or has stubborn algal blooms you can’t seem to get rid of, the following six steps will quickly return it to peak condition for that first exhilarating swim. 

Step 1: Test pool water

The results will indicate whether your pool needs chlorine, pH, calcium and total alkaline levels adjusted. Swimart’s water experts will advise you on the best course of action and recommend the appropriate products. While you're there, pick up a test kit if you don't have one so you can regularly check and maintain levels. 

Step 2: Check pool equipment

Before you add any products to your pool, turn your pump on (if it isn’t already running) and run it for a few hours to help clear debris and dirt from water. Check the filter, skimmer box and pump to ensure they are all working efficiently and clear any blockages or visible calcium build-up. Contact your local Swimart for a personalised solution taking into account your pool equipment. 

If your filter cartridge needs a clean, give it a good wash with the hose. If you have a Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) filter, you may need to take it apart and clean it with a small brush and water. If you have a sand filter, set it to backwash to flush it out (don’t forget to return it to its normal setting). 3: Balance pool water 

Pool water turns green when the chlorine level is too low.Depending on your pool’s current water quality, you may need to add a number of chemicals to adjust the pH level (optimal level is between 7 and 7.6). It is very important to request advise as there are certain chemical products (for example chlorine and acid) that can not be mixed or added together at the same time. Visit your local Swimart for a free water test  and expert recommendations on how to treat your pool water with the right products and dosages.  

Step 4: Add a quality sanitiser  

Your pool water may need to be sanitised to condition and ready it for other treatments. Swimart recommends a chlorine-free treatment called Aqua-Health Ultra Shock, which destroys organic waste and leaves your pool water clean and healthy. Simply dose while the pump is running and wait a few hours before swimming. 

For a more rapid sanitising effect, Aqua-Health’s Instant Pool Chlorine Pellets can be added straight to the skimmer without the use of a floating dispenser. They’re easy to use, have a built-in stabiliser and do not alter water hardness.   

Step 5: Clean the surface of your pool 

Brush your pool’s walls, which helps remove algae and loosen dirt. Swimart's PRO Algae Brush is designed to cut open the hard membranes of “black spot” algae so that an algaecide can effectively kill the algae.
