GRANULAR CHORINE VS LIQUID CHLORINE

10 May 2022

We look at the pros and cons between the two types of chlorine for your swimming pool.

What’s the difference between granular and liquid chlorine? Well, it depends on a couple of factors.

Liquid chlorine (also known as Sodium Hypochlorite) is one of the easiest forms of chlorine to use, as there's no need for premixing. It has a limited shelf life so shouldn't be purchased too far in advance.

Granular chlorine, on the other hand, needs to be dissolved in a bucket of water before being added to your pool. Its pH is not as high as that of liquid chlorine, but it still tends to raise your pH. Because of the 35 per cent calcium content in this type of chlorine, it also can have the effect of lifting your calcium hardness level.

Put simply:

  • Liquid chlorine is easy to use and requires no pre-mixing
  • Granular chlorine must be mixed in a bucket with water
