|You've just come home from a long day at work (or spent a long morning mowing the lawn). Then you remember that the pool needs to be cleaned. So much for sitting back and relaxing. Unless, of course, you have a pool cleaner. But before you jump into the car and head off to buy one, it's worth knowing what's out there.
Pool cleaners are hardworking little machines that can travel more than 1000 kilometres a year, which means a lot of wear and tear on their parts. So it's important to buy the best model you can afford. Saving money on a cheaper model now could mean spending more to replace it in the short term.
There are three types of pool cleaners out there: suction, pressure and robotic.
Suction cleaners attach to the skimmer box using a hose and literally suck up the dirt and gunk. There are inertia driven suction cleaners that clean in a pattern but may take some time to clean the whole surface. Then there are geared suction cleaners, which move in a pre-set pattern and clean the area faster than their inertia-driven brothers.
As the most technically advanced pool cleaner of its type in the world, the features of The Pool Cleaner have been further enhanced for the Swimkleen to ensure long lasting performance and durability
Pressure cleaners have more power than their suction cousins. Most require an extra booster pump, and that means adding another hose connection in the pool wall. The ones that connect directly to the existing pool pump may put extra pressure on the filter, which could in turn wear it out before its time.
Pressure cleaners that connect directly into your existing pool pump may put strain on the filtration system.
Robotic pool cleaners are placed in the pool and zip up and down cleaning the floor, walls and waterline. They run on electricity, so you'll need to have an electrician install an outdoor power point.
Trident robotic pool cleaners use a fraction of the resources consumed by other pool cleaning systems – saving you time and money, and minimising environmental impact. With an automated robotic pool cleaner you no longer have to endure the daily hassle of cleaning your pool yourself. You can also significantly reduce your use of electricity, water and chemicals.
Robotic pool cleaners demand less power than filtration pumps and motors for suction cleaners, and reduce filtration needs in general. They also substantially reduce the amount of potable water consumed when cleaning a pool, which in turn potentially reduces the amount of chemicals needed.

Other features to consider
- Check that the hose is long enough to reach from one end of the pool to the other. Allow an extra couple of metres just to be safe.
- Consider if the model you choose can climb the pool steps or you'll need to clean them manually.
- Some cleaners can be used while the pool cover is on – perfect when you've got your winter cover in place.
- Make sure your pool cleaner has adjustable hose buoyancy and main flow to enable it to cope with different pool shapes and sizes.
